Os Filmes de Marlon Brando - Parte 5

Candy

Uma jovem e inocente garota colegial, conhecida apenas como Candy (Docinho) acaba conhecendo uma longa série de homens mais velhos, alguns bem interessantes, outros completamente malucos. E nessas experiências vai aprendendo sobre o amor, a vida e a felicidade. E tudo vai acontecendo em plena era do flower power, no mágico ano de 1968, em pleno auge do movimento hippie. Em sua autobiografia, em um momento de confissão e lucidez, Brando reconheceu que fez filmes bem ruins ao longo de sua carreira. Um exemplo que ele citou foi justamente esse "Candy". Para Brando fazer esse filme foi um dos maiores erros de sua carreira. Apenas aceitou o convite porque se considerava muito amigo do diretor Christian Marquand e não teve coragem de lhe dizer não! Iria se arrepender amargamente nos anos seguintes. 

O filme foi feito no período em que nada parecia dar certo na vida do ator. Muitos problemas pessoais envolvendo suas ex-esposas e na vida profissional as coisas também não iam bem, com sucessivos fracassos de bilheteria. De uma coisa tenho certeza, Brando acertou em sua avaliação pessoal. Esse filme é muito ruim mesmo. Nada parece certo, passando pela história boboca, indo pelos figurinos bizarros e até mesmo pela má interpretação do próprio Brando. E olha que seu elenco está cheio de gente famosa da época, mas nada disso pareceu melhorar um filme fadado a ser muito fraco. Enfim, um erro da primeira à última cena. O pior filme de Marlon Brando, sem dúvida!

A Noite do Dia Seguinte

Um filme de Marlon Brando que não é tão conhecido. Na verdade foi produzido em um momento de baixa na sua carreira. Talvez por isso também seja tão modesto em suas pretensões artísticas. É um filme que se propõe a contar apenas uma boa história de crime. Nada mais. E olhando-se sob esse ponto de vista até que ele funciona muito bem. Então qual é a história que esse filme nos conta? Marlon Brando interpreta o membro de uma quadrilha de sequestradores americanos que resolve raptar a jovem filha de um banqueiro rico. Ela desce do avião em Paris e cai numa armadilha. O personagem de Brando, vestido como motorista, a engana. Ela então é levada para uma casa isolada, próximo à costa. Após ser presa em seu cativeiro começam as negociações.

O plano do sequestro é bem elaborado. O problema são os criminosos. Apenas o personagem de Brando parece ter a mente no lugar. Os demais são problemáticos. Rita Moreno interpreta uma aeromoça que trabalha com os criminosos. Ela tem participação importante no sequestro, mas viciada em drogas, está sempre em busca de cocaína. Assim ela coloca quase tudo a perder. A atriz ficou perdidamente apaixonada por Brando no filme e chegou até mesmo a tentar se matar! Pior de todos é o criminoso mais velho do grupo, um sujeito perverso, cruel, com ares de psicopatia. Enfim, temos aqui um bom filme, um thriller criminal onde nada parece caminhar para um final feliz - e realmente não vá esperando por isso. Brando tem uma atuação contida. Fisicamente ele está muito bem, magro, com cabelos loiros e com elegante figurino. Só não parece ter se esforçado muito em seu papel.

A Noite do Dia Seguinte (The Night of the Following Day, Estados Unidos, 1969) Direção: Hubert Cornfield / Roteiro:Hubert Cornfield, Robert Phippeny / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Richard Boone, Rita Moreno / Sinopse: A filha de um rico banqueiro norte-americano é sequestrada em Paris. Os criminosos planejam bem o crime, exigindo alguns milhões de dólares de resgate, mas algo acaba saindo completamente errado do que havia sido planejado.

Queimada

Muitas pessoas foram surpreendidas quando a autobiografia de Marlon Brando foi lançada e nela o ator considerava esse o seu melhor filme! Ninguém tinha a menor ideia de que ele gostava tanto desse filme, até porque comercialmente não foi uma produção bem sucedida, muito pelo contrário. E essa sensação de exagero por parte do ator fica ainda mais evidenciado quando assistimos a esse filme nos dias de hoje. Está mais para a linguagem do cinema italiano da época do que da forma de se produzir filmes em Hollywood. Há claramente uma sensação, ao assistirmos ao filme, de que estamos vendo uma obra cinematográfica quase amadora, tanto no aspecto de cenários, figurinos, edição e direção de arte de uma forma em geral, como também do próprio roteiro, que me pareceu bem truncado. 

Penso que Brando gostou mais de fazer o filme do que propriamente do que viu na tela. E tiro essa onclusão do próprio texto escrito pelo ator em seu livro. Ele não parece dizer, em momento algum, que foi um grande filme, mas que sim, certamente se lembrou de todas as histórias inusitadas que viveu no set de filmagens. Brando tinha uma relação muito conturbada com esse diretor italiano e quando descobriu que ele tinha várias superstições resolveu brincar no set, o que quase levou esse diretor à loucura. Só lendo sua autobiografia para conferir. De minha parte penso que é apenas um filme regular, bem mediano mesmo. Hoje em dia não seria nada bem recebido pela crítica mundial (como na época também não foi, diga-se de passagem). 

Queimada (Burn!, Itália, França, Estados Unidos, 1969) Direção: Gillo Pontecorvo / Roteiro: Franco Solinas, Giorgio Arlorio / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Evaristo Márquez, Renato Salvatori / Sinopse: Em 1844, um mercenário britânico ajuda os escravos revoltados de uma colónia insular das Antilhas a conquistar a independência de Portugal, mas depois regressa para caçar um líder rebelde local e antigo protegido.

Os que Chegam com a Noite

Durante sua longa carreira o ator Marlon Brando poucas vezes flertou com o gênero terror! Um profissional formado no Actors Studio, em Nova Iorque, ele certamente pensou que esse estilo de cinema jamais cruzaria seu caminho. Uma breve e rara exceção ocorreu com esse "Os Que Chegam Com a Noite". Não era essencialmente um filme tradicional no gênero, mas apostava em um enredo que seria uma espécie de prévia do que acontecia em um dos filmes de terror mais clássicos da história do cinema, "Os Inocentes" de 1961. Nesse primeiro filme Deborah Kerr teve uma de suas mais elogiadas atuações. Anos depois decidiu-se contar o que teria acontecido antes da trama de "Os Inocentes". O resultado foi esse hoje considerado cult "Os Que Chegam com a Noite". Aliás uma boa dobradinha para o cinéfilo seria assistir os dois filmes em sequência. Primeiro o de Deboarh Kerr, depois esse com Marlon Brando.

Esse foi o último filme que Marlon Brando fez antes de sua consagração em "O Poderoso Chefão". Ele foi filmado na Inglaterra, o que levou muitos jornalistas a decretarem o fim de sua carreira na época! Muitos diziam que nenhum estúdio de Hollywood bancaria mais filmes com o ator, não apenas por seu terrível temperamento nas filmagens, mas também porque Brando não significava mais retorno imediato nas bilheterias, uma vez que seus últimos lançamentos se tornaram fracassos comerciais. Processado por ex-mulheres, sendo perseguido pela imprensa por causa de sua disfuncional vida familiar, o ator não viu outra saída senão trocar de ares - o que fez muito bem. "Os Que Chegam Com a Noite" é um filme por demais interessante. Todo rodado na Inglaterra rural a produção também se apresenta como um prequel do famoso livro de Henry James, "Turn of the Screw" (no Brasil, "A Volta do Parafuso").

Certamente eu já tinha propensão a gostar desse estilo de filme por dois motivos: gosto de tramas passadas na Inglaterra rural (sou fã de cineastas como James Ivory) e tenho a tendência de sempre gostar das atuações de Marlon Brando, mesmo quando ele não está particularmente inspirado. Aqui o ator se apresenta de forma natural, sem exageros à la Actors Studio. O personagem simplista, um trabalhador comum chamado Peter Quint, caiu como uma luva para a personalidade do ator. Cabelos grisalhos, grandes e despenteados Brando dá um tom selvagem e indomado ao criado da bela mansão do filme e mais uma vez rouba as atenções para si. Também gostei do clima bucólico que reina em praticamente todo o filme. O que acaba enganando o espectador pois por baixo dessa normalidade se esconde uma situação terrível, o que desencadeará eventos macabros. É uma daquelas tramas que parecem caminhar para uma direção, mas que no final chegará em algo completamente diverso do que o espectador estava esperando. O terror é psicológico, sutil e no final se mostra bem impactante.

Na história o trabalhador Peter Quint (Marlon Brando) acaba se aproximando de uma família rica, numa propriedade rural na Inglaterra. Isso dará origem a eventos trágicos e terríveis. Filme indicado ao BAFTA Awards na categoria de Melhor Ator (Marlon Brando).

Morituri

Durante a II Guerra Mundial, um estranho sujeito, Robert Crain (Marlon Brando), se faz passar por um oficial nazista SS em um cargueiro em alto-mar que transportava uma preciosa carga para o esforço de guerra alemão. Na realidade ele seria um agente britânico infiltrado na embarcação. Seu objetivo seria facilitar a captura do cargueiro pela marinha inglesa antes que ele chegasse em seu porto de descarga. E se para isso fosse preciso atuar como sabotador, ele estaria pronto para alcançar esse desafio. 

Marlon Brando não queria fazer esse filme, mas precisando de dinheiro, acabou aceitando. As filmagens foram complicadas, realizadas em um velho cargueiro ancorado no porto de Los Angeles. A velha embarcação estava cheia de ferrugem e Brando confessou que tinha até mesmo medo de trabalhar naquele lugar. De qualquer forma ele usou sua influência de grande astro para mudar o roteiro, que originalmente era muito bom, escrito pelo mesmo roteirista do clássico "A Um Passo da Eternidade". Não foi uma boa ideia pois Brando não era roteirista de cinema. Suas mudanças prejudicaram o desenvolvimento da história do filme. Também forçou a contratação de seu amigo de longa data, Wally Cox. 

O resultado ficou apenas regular. O filme teve duas honrosas indicações ao Oscar nas categorias de melhor fotografia em preto e branco (indicação mais do que merecida) e melhor figurino. Comercialmente o filme foi um fracasso de bilheteria o que para Brando na época foi uma péssima notícia pois seus últimos filmes também não tinham feito qualquer sucesso. De uma forma ou outra, mesmo com tantos problemas, ainda considero um dos filmes mais interessantes da filmografia de Marlon Brando. Claro, poderia ser muito melhor, mas do jeito que ficou, até que não se tornou tão ruim como muitos dizem. 

Morituri (Morituri, Estados Unidos, 1965) Estúdio: Twentieth Century Fox / Direção: Bernhard Wicki / Roteiro: Werner Jörg Lüddecke, Daniel Taradash / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, Janet Margolin, Trevor Howard, Wally Cox, Hans Christian Blech / Sinopse: Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial espiões ingleses, alemães e americanos disputam o controle das informações e sabotagens em um navio, em águas turbulentas pelo maior conflito armado da história. 

Caçada Humana

Existe críticos que classificam esse filme como um western. Bom, eu não concordaria com esse tipo de visão. Não é um filme passado nos séculos XVIII e XIX e nem conta uma história sobre a colonização do Oeste Selvagem. Na realidade é um filme passado nos anos 60, mostrando a ebulição social que ocorria dentro da sociedade norte-americana naquele período histórico. Marlon Brando está excelente como um xerife de uma pequena cidade do sul. O ator que sempre foi um liberal e um progressista de carteirinha, usou esse papel para de certa forma denunciar o racismo, a corrupção e até mesmo a mentalidade fascista de homens da lei que imperavam naquele momento. Brando usa seu papel para mostrar o tipo mais asqueroso possível. E nesse processo certamente sentiu um grande prazer em denunciar no cinema esse tipo de facínora fardado. 

Jane Fonda era jovem e linda quando realizaou esse filme. Realmente ela estava na sua melhor forma, ainda colhendo os frutos de sua juventude. Já era, mesmo naquela idade, uma boa atriz, mas vamos convir que não conseguia fazer frente ao talento de Brando. Quando eles contracenam no filme isso fica bem claro. Brando parece uma força da natureza em sua atuação, já ela parece estar meio assustada e isso não era bem uma característica de sua personagem. Há claramente um desnível de atuação entre eles dois. O resto do elenco é excelente, contando inclusive com jovens atores que iriam virar astros em Hollywood como o próprio Robert Redford! Enfim, esse pode ser considerado um dos bons filmes de Brando naquela fase em que sua carreira estava em baixa em termos de bilheteria. Não fez o sucesso esperado e nem conseguiu dar um alívio para Brando no aspecto puramente comercial, mas é sem dúvida um grande filme de sua carreira. 

Caçada Humana (The Chase, Estados Unidos, 1966) Direção: Arthur Penn / Roteiro: Arthur Penn, Horton Foote / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Angie Dickinson, Robert Duvall, James Fox, Jocelyn Brando / Sinopse: Numa pequena cidade sulista dos Estados Unidos, um xerife violento e brutal caça um fugitivo da justiça. E essa caçada se torna a maior de suas obsessões pessoais. 

Sangue em Sonora

Filmado em locações no Estado americano de Utah, em 1966, o filme "Sangue em Sonora" trouxe um Marlon Brando estrelando um western de estrutura tradicional, o que de certa forma era um surpresa já que o ator era conhecido não só por seu talento, mas também por sempre procurar trabalhar em projetos mais ousados e polêmicos. O que teria acontecido então para Brando embarcar em um projeto, digamos assim, tão comum? Conforme explicou em sua própria autobiografia "Canções que minha mãe me ensinou" o que o levou a filmes como esse foi a simples necessidade de ganhar muito dinheiro para bancar os problemas financeiros que enfrentou.

Na década de 1960 Brando teve que enfrentar uma incrível série de contratempos. Suas ex-esposas o processaram, a guarda de seus filhos exigia que o ator desembolsasse somas cada vez maiores para pagar os advogados e sua querida ilha Tetiroa só lhe trazia prejuízos. Mal conseguia construir seu hotel um furacão vinha e destruía com tudo. O ator pretendia transformar o local em ponto turístico ambiental mas jamais concretizou seus planos por causa da irascível natureza da região. Assim, atolado com muitas dívidas, Marlon Brando se dispôs a se deslocar para uma locação de díficil acesso para começar as filmagens desse faroeste.

Em seu livro Brando recordou que ficou surpreso ao chegar lá e saber que tinha sido o mesmo local onde John Wayne havia filmado um conhecido western na era de ouro do cinema. O problema era que o local ficava muito próximo de uma base americana de testes nucleares. Para Brando muito provavelmente foi nesse local que John Wayne teria sido contaminado por depósitos de lixo nuclear (urânio), o que teria sido decisivo para o desenvolvimento do câncer que vitimaria o veterano ator anos depois. Brando afirmaria depois: "Não deixava de ser uma ironia o fato do grande defensor da indústria armamentista nuclear norte-americana ter sido morto justamente por ter sido contaminado por seu lixo deixado no local". Não era novidade para ninguém que ambos os atores se detestavam na vida pessoal, pois Brando era um típico liberal enquanto John Wayne era um defensor ferrenho dos ideais do partido Republicano, símbolo do conservadorismo nos Estados Unidos.

Deixando de lado todos esses problemas de egos tão comuns nos grandes atores de cinema, vamos ao filme em si. Como afirmei antes o filme tem uma estrutura comum e simples. O diretor Sidney J Furie não quis arriscar muito, até porque na época não passava de um novato com poucos filmes significantes no currículo. Trabalhar com Marlon Brando também não era nada fácil, pois o ator tinha um histórico de problemas com diretores nos sets de filmagens. A sorte de Furie foi que na ocasião Brando estava envolvido em tantos problemas pessoais que simplesmente não quis infernizar ainda mais sua vida com confusões de bastidores no set de filmagens.

Assim os trabalhos transcorreram sem grandes incidentes, tudo resultando em um filme que é um bom western, embora muito longe do que se esperaria de um gênio da atuação como Brando. Na realidade só existem dois bons momentos para Brando em toda a (curta) duração do filme. A cena inicial do filme, por exemplo, com Brando na Igreja, gera bons momentos ao roteiro, porém a melhor parte acontece depois quando Brando enfrenta o vilão Chuy Medina (interpretado por um irreconhecível John Saxon) na taberna. A queda de braço com escorpiões realmente foi uma excelente idéia, que casou muito bem com a proposta do filme que no fundo não passava de um Western de rotina com altas doses de Tequila. "Sangue em Sonora" não é nem de longe o mais brilhante momento do mito Brando nas telas nos anos 1960, mas mantém o interesse e diverte, o que no final é o que realmente importa.

Sangue em Sonora (The Appaloosa, Estados Unidos, 1966) Direção: Sidney J. Furie / Roteiro: James Bridges, Roland Kibbee / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Anjanette Comen, John Saxon / Sinopse: Matt Fletcher (Marlon Brando) chega em uma cidade perdida na fronteira entre EUA e México. Lá pretende encontrar com um amigo do passado que agora está casado e com família. Os eventos porém se interpõe em seu caminho o lançando em uma luta de proporções gigantescas com bandoleiros e patifes que infestam a região. Filme indicado ao Globo de Ouro na categoria de Melhor Ator Coadjuvante (John Saxon).

A Condessa de Hong Kong

Um diplomata norte-americano se surpreende numa viagem de cruzeiro quando descobre em uma cabine, escondida, uma mulher que se diz condessa russa, mas será mesmo que ela estaria dizendo a verdade? Comédia de costumes dirigida pelo mestre do humor Charles Chaplin. Até os maiores gênios do cinema possuem seus tropeços. O maior tropeço da filmografia de Charles Chaplin veio nessa comédia sem graça com um elenco que era muito popular na época, mas que definitivamente não deu certo em cena. Foi uma má ideia do diretor (naquela época já bem idoso) chamar Marlon Brando para atuar no filme. Ele nunca foi comediante na vida, não tinha talento para o humor, algo reconhecido pelo próprio. 

Só aceitou fazer o filme porque afinal o convite partiu de Chaplin e ele tinha muito interesse em ser dirigido por um dos maiores gênios do cinema na história. Só que as boas intenções iniciais na realização desse projeto foram em vão. O filme é ruim de doer, realmente constrangedor. O roteiro apresenta um tipo de humor que já naquela época era muito ultrapassado. Chaplin usando de gags da era do cinema mudo errou e errou feio. Não demorou muito e o próprio Marlon Brando entendeu que o filme iria afundar, tanto que ele anos depois o chamou de "meu maior desastre na carreira". Pois é, mesmo com os melhores profissionais, um filme pode fracassar de forma absoluta. Basta ter os atores errados ser lançado na época errada. Esse filme provou essas duas coisas de forma excepcional. 

A Condessa de Hong Kong (A Countess from Hong Kong, Estados Unidos, 1967) Estúdio: Universal Pictures / Direção: Charles Chaplin / Roteiro: Charles Chaplin / Elenco: Marlon Brando, Sophia Loren, Sydney Chaplin, Charles Chaplin, Tippi Hedren, Patrick Cargill / Sinopse: Comédia de Charles Chaplin mosttando um grupo de turistas e passageiros envolvidos nas maiores confusões durante uma longa jornada pela exótica de cruzeiro rumo à cidade de Hong Kong.

Os Pecados de Todos Nós

Definitivamente não é uma obra para todos os públicos, um filme que vá agradar a todos os setores, muito pelo contrário. O diretor John Huston não fez nenhuma concessão e entregou uma obra crua, visceral, sem nenhum tipo de amenização. Marlon Brando, como sempre, se destaca. Acho esse um de seus personagens mais corajosos. O ator joga a imagem de galã fora e encara um papel extremamente complexo e polêmico. Aqui ele interpreta um Major do exército americano com o casamento em crise, em frangalhos. Sua esposa, interpretada por Elizabeth Taylor, em mais uma de seus excelentes caracterizações, é uma fútil dona de casa que passa os dias em longas cavalgadas ao lado de seu amante, um oficial que mora vizinho ao casal na vila militar onde residem. Isso já bastaria para caracterizar esse casamento como disfuncional mas isso não é tudo.

O problema básico do Major Weldon Penderton (Marlon Brando) é que ele não tem mais nenhum desejo sexual pela esposa, pois na realidade é um homossexual enrustido que não consegue exteriorizar e vivenciar sua verdadeira orientação sexual. Após ver um soldado cavalgando nu pelo bosque, o Major acaba ficando obcecado por ele. Tudo caminha então para um clímax ao melhor estilo do diretor Huston, com muitas nuances psicológicas e tensão entre os principais personagens. A hipocrisia do núcleo familiar considerado ideal pela moralista sociedade norte-americana também é exposta sem receios. O grande número de homossexuais escondidos no armário dentro da vida militar também é explorada. O roteiro do filme acerta em cheio na hipocrisia reinante nesse meio.

O argumento soa na realidade como uma provocação por parte de John Huston para com toda a sociedade norte-americana. A família tradicional e o sistema militar são obviamente seus principais alvos. Na porta de entrada dos Estados Unidos na guerra do Vietnã, ele ousou colocar um tema tabu em cena: o homossexualismo dentro das casernas militares. Mais explosivo do que isso impossível. Além disso expõe os problemas que existiam por baixo da imagem impecável das famílias conservadoras daquele país. O marido que posa de cidadão exemplar na verdade despreza sua esposa e esconde seus desejos sexuais mais inconfessáveis. A esposa é infiel, sem conteúdo, rasa, vazia, materialista e tola. Um retrato demolidor de um modelo que nos anos 1960 vinha abaixo.

"Reflections in a Golden Eye" foi baseado na obra da escritora Carson McCullers, uma autora que não tinha receio de tocar nas feridas mais profundas da América. Aqui ao lado de Huston, Liz Taylor e Marlon Brando, ela finalmente encontrou a transposição perfeita de sua obra para as telas de cinema. Em conclusão, "O Pecado de Todos Nós" é uma produção nada confortável e nem amenizadora. No fundo é um retrato controvertido que coloca na berlinda alguns dos pilares mais prezados pelos conservadores americanos. Não deixe de assistir.

Com fortes inclinações homossexuais, ele não consegue mais conter seus desejos ao mesmo tempo em que negligencia sua esposa Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor), uma dona de casa vazia e fútil, em um casamento de aparências, de fachada.
